From the illusions of the emigrant to the despair of the immigrant: An investigation into the changing migration strategy of undocumented migrants at different stages of the migration process

Dr Michael Collyer and Professor Russell King
Sussex Centre for Migration Research, University of Sussex
£114,186 over 3 years

Dr Collyer and Professor King will explore the poorly understood experiences of undocumented migrants. Using a dual sampling data collection strategy in Morocco and Europe they will gather data from migrants and would-be migrants to learn how the migration experience changes migrants' perception of their home and intended country of migration. They hope to contribute to three bodies of empirical and theoretical work - those of social networks, illegal migration and exclusion, and smuggling and trafficking. Dr Collyer is fluent in English and French and will further develop his language skills in Spanish and Moroccan Arabic. He will receive training in oral history interviewing, quantitative statistical analysis and cartographic data presentation.
