Dr Karen Middleton and Professor William Beinart
Department of Politics and St Antony's College, University of Oxford
£100,000 over three years
Dr Middleton and Professor Beinart plan to explore the potential of agaves and prickly pears for improving economic and social life in arid and sub-arid lands. They will do so through a comparative historical analysis of plant transfers, taking account of social, cultural, economic and political factors, in conjunction with evidence from the natural sciences. In partnership with the Professor Beinart, Dr Middleton will extend her disciplinary expertise in social anthropology to include environmental and political history.
