A behavioural microsimulation of ethnic disadvantage in labour markets

Dr Edmund Chattoe and Professor Anthony Heath
Department of Sociology, University of Oxford
£104,254 over 3 years

Dr Chattoe and Professor Heath will use computer micro-simulation to develop a model that seeks to explain the differential labour market disadvantage experienced by different ethnic minorities. Their aim is to integrate existing partial theories of disadvantage based on individual and structural determinants of labour market position, to test the resulting model and assess how effective a range of policy interventions might be in alleviating disadvantage. The project will also allow them to draw out more general implications about the value of micro-simulation as a sociological method. Dr Chattoe’s PhD is in economics as is much of his research experience to-date. The Fellowship will allow him to develop new quantitative and analytical skills and undertake a first substantive research project in sociology.
