£99,500 over three years

Dr Ben Crewe and Dr Alison Liebling have been awarded £99,500 over three years for the study of 'A new society of captives: masculinity and modern penal culture'. Dr Crewe and Dr Liebling will study the social and cultural life of male prisoners and the role of masculinity in the structuring and experience of their imprisonment. They will examine the practices of prisoners and prison staff, their culture, relationships and identities, using ethnographic prison sociology to understand the inner life of the prison, the flow of power and the way in which prisoners adapt to modern prison life. Dr Crewe will extend his expertise in masculinity within sociology and develop ethnographic and qualitative research skills.
