Jewels Orton, studying law

Back in 1995 the Elizabeth Nuffield Educational Fund was kind enough to support me with a small grant towards my educational degree course at Sheffield University. Unfortunately at that time I experienced several major problems that eventually took their toll and forced me to withdraw from that particular course.

However, my studies continued in other forms and I completed a RSA Diploma in Business Administration in 1995 at Stockport College, which enabled me to pursue a PGCE in Business Education at Sheffield Hallam University and as a result have I been working as a secondary school teacher for four years. Presently I am studying a CPE (Common Professional Examination – Law) at Staffordshire University and have already been accepted, commencing in September, at the BPP Law School, Leeds, for the BVC (Bar Vocational Training) to train as a barrister. I was also accepted to do a LLM in Commercial Law at Derby University online and intend to complete this within the next couple of years. Whilst completing my CPE studies and working as a supply teacher I have also retrained as a primary school teacher. I work often with children of special needs and also qualified as a registered counsellor.

Hard work, self-determination with the support, faith and help of organisations such as the ENEF has helped to bring about my academic successes. Without such initial support the achievements and accreditation I have since acquired would have been even more difficult to gain. A small amount of funding does lend itself to the future of others. It isn’t just about the monetary gain but that financial support gives you the acknowledgement that you are indeed capable of so much more.
