Q1. Why are you closing the scheme?
In 2011, we commissioned an external evaluation of our work in Science and Mathematics education. The review has shown us that while the Undergraduate scheme continues to give excellent value the external context has changed and this kind of award is now funded by a range of other providers.
In the light of this, the Trustees have decided that the time has come to close our Undergraduate scheme and focus our support on initiatives where the Foundation is playing a distinctive role, in particular on the Science Bursaries for Schools and Colleges scheme.
We are aware that closing the scheme will leave a gap, and in order to manage the transition carefully we have offered to match fund bursaries being offered by a range of other organisations in 2012 and 2013. Details of these will be released in January 2012.
Q2. If you're closing the scheme, why will there be bursaries available in 2012?
We are aware that the Foundation has been a significant provider of undergraduate bursaries, and want to make sure that enough opportunities still exist for students wishing to take part in a summer research project. Therefore, we we have offered to match fund bursaries being offered by a range of other organisations. We are in discussion with a number of learned societies and expect to be able to announce the new arrangements early in 2012.
Q3. What should I do if I want to apply in 2012?
Details of the application process for each eligible subject area are now available in our Apply for funding section. Please note that application deadlines vary, so you must be sure to check the correct information for your subject area.
