Deaf children in education projects

Several of our Foundations for learning projects have focussed on the specific need of deaf children in the education system.

New teaching and learning resources for deaf children have recently been launched as a result of a research project undertaken by Professor Terezinha Nunes and funded by the Foundation. The resources were developed based on a system of visual representation of morphemes (units of meaning).

We are funding a team from City University to undertake research to aid the recognition of dyslexia in deaf children. Currently there are no standardised assessments for identifying dyslexia in deaf children, and this project will collect data from deaf children's reading tests to develop normative data for this group.

A longitudinal Scottish study is currently underway to examine the relationship between early support for deaf children and their academic, social and vocational outcomes.

If you are interested in applying for funding in this area, please read the Foundations for learning priorities for funding.
