Nuffield Applying Mathematical Processes (AMP)

This sample of AMP resources, co-funded by the Clothworkers and Nuffield Foundation, are based on 20 of the Graded Assessment in Mathematics (GAIM) materials produced with Nuffield support in the 1980s. They are classroom-trialled resources to support teachers in their teaching and assessment of the key processes of mathematics at Key Stages 3 and 4.

The AMP activities include:

Mathematical Investigations, such as working out how many texts are sent if everyone in a group sends one to all the others in the group.

Practical Explorations, such as designing a table or scheduling the work to be done in a fashion workshop.

The activities are accessible for almost all secondary students, support the learning of mathematical processes, offer a wide range of realistic contexts and relate to a broad spectrum of the mathematics curriculum content (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data handling, probability and many more). Some are more suitable for group work, some may extend the most capable of students - these and related aspects are discussed in the teachers' notes.

Each activity comes with a 'student stimulus sheet' and 'teachers' notes' and some have Flash and/or PDF files for use with Interactive White Boards and computers.

Support for teaching and assessment

The teachers’ notes for each activity provide:

  • guidance on how to run the activity in the classroom.
  • probing questions to help students to progress during the activity.
  • a progression table showing stages of development through the task, across the various key processes.
  • sample responses from students, illustrating elements of the progression table.

Pilot teachers used the progression tables to inform the guidance they gave students and to assess and chart students' progress; they also used them to enable students to map their progress and to see how they could improve, both through self and peer assessment. A Word version of each progression table is available so that it can be adapted as necessary. Related materials There are 80 original GAIM activities and these can be accessed via the eLibrary.

AMP Investigations

These AMP activities are accessible to all secondary students. Around half the activities are abstract investigations and half are practical explorations set in realistic contexts. Suitability for group work, required equipment, key mathematical features, extension opportunities, etc. are touched on in the teachers...
